Before I left on the study abroad trip, I had heard the same stories and testimonies over and over again about how important it is to interact with other cultures. I heard that traveling will increase your ability to understand and interact with other cultures. I heard that business is becoming more and more global, and consequently, international perspective is becoming more and more important.
As I now look back over the past five weeks and reflect upon what I have seen and learned, I now can add my testimony to those that have repetedly been born to me. I think the importance and impact of interacting with other cultures is something that must be experienced to truly embrace and understand.
In our travels, we were able to spend time with a variety of people from different cultures, and I have learned so much from each of these individuals! Here are some examples of lessons learned from new friends in cultures and lifestyles that are very different than my own.
Case Studies with our Chilean amiga Caroline, student at Catholica Universidad de Valporaiso
Lesson Learned: When we come together and cooperate, we can accomplish and understand more. This is true when we share both skills and insights.

Hosted dinner with Anaisa, Chilean business student at Catholica Universidad de Valporaiso
Lesson Learned: We are examples to everyone around us, at all times.

Bus Ride with Carlos, a USU student from the Dominican Republic
Lesson Learned: Look out for other people. And have fun!

My little girlfriends in Huilloc
Lesson Learned: Kids are kids! There is happiness, fun, and a reason to smile
all around, if you will pay attention and notice it.

Utah State and Huilloc students
Lesson Learned: Be grateful for what you have, and celebrate!
We are more alike than we are different. We're often told to celebrate our differences, but I'd say we should celebrate and embrace what we have in common! This is the way to appreciate each other for what we are and help each other grow.

My Peruvian friend from the eyeglass clinic
Lesson Learned: Warmth, kindness, smiles and friendship are never wasted.
Presentation day with Irina, a USU student from Armenia
Lesson Learned: Dream big! When you want something, don't let anything hold you back.
There is so much to learn from those around us, whether it is within our own culture, or between different cultures. Specifically in working with other cultures, we not only come to understand and appreciate them, but we come to realize and understand our own culture. We learn to identify who we are, what has helped get us to this point, and see the blessings of our everyday lives that are easily taken for granted. We also come to realize the boundaries we have set on ourselves, so we can then question them and work to expand our limits and grow as much as possible.
It is a wonderful thing to be immersed with other cultures and work together to learn and grow!
